Sponsored, all volunteer powered rock and roll radio station. This week, we’re going to welcome back two incredible guests. We’ve got Chris Dodge and Brittany Battle. They’re here to talk about some exciting updates with the Tucson Jazz Festival, which is kicking off this week.

Tom Heath
And they’re also going to talk about their highly anticipated live Valentine’s Day performance. So we’re going to dig into jazz live music and a little bit of mentorship. Today is January 12th, 2025. My name is Tom Heath and you’re listening to Life Along the Street. Each and every Sunday, our focus on social, cultural and economic developments in Tucson’s urban core.

Well, we’ve got two, two guests coming back this week, and it’s a really fun interview, but there’s so much going on.

Tom Heath
And in Tucson, this time of year, getting a little bit of chilly weather finally. And, some exciting stuff happening. The jazz festival is kicking off this week. We’re going to talk a little bit about that in the interview, but if you want to get more details, it’s the Tucson Jazz festival.org. There’s stuff at the starting this Thursday, with a soundtrack to the to a curator at the Loft Cinema.

Tom Heath
There’s things at the Century Room, obviously with jazz, Rialto Theater, the Fox AC Marriott, and of course, every, year on Martin Luther King Day, there’s a free outdoor concert downtown, which we’ll, we’ll dig into as well. So head over to, the Tucson Jazz festival.org if you want to get more information on the event itself.

Tom Heath
And again, we’re going to touch upon it in our interview, today with, Chris Dodge and, and Brittany Battle. They are some incredible musicians here in Tucson. And we’ve had them both on the show in the past. Chris was here talking about the Tucson Jazz Festival, I think in 23, maybe 24, I don’t know.

Tom Heath
It was a while ago, but we got to interview him, and, Brady was actually on the show as part of her role with Social Venture Partners. And we were talking about a fast pitch competition and, some community development work that she was doing with nonprofits really, amazing, individual within our community. And then all of a sudden we find out she’s this amazing singer.

Tom Heath
So we we had to, to get that story and share it with you. So this is an interview recorded a couple of weeks ago with, Chris Dodge and Brittany Battle. So this is an exciting time for me. I am back with two returning guests, which doesn’t usually happen once. Once is enough for many people. And not only that, but they’re back together.

Tom Heath
For a brand new venture. We’ve got Chris Dodge, got Brittany Battle and Brittany. Last time you were here was about social venture partners, right? Are you still doing that thing?

Brittany Battle
Absolutely. Okay, so, you know, my day job.

Tom Heath
You’re still helping the community through that.

Brittany Battle
Right? And we do it through storytelling and fundraising and building confidence.

Tom Heath
Fantastic. The best it has to get. If you want to know more about that, we’ll have it on our website. Really good interview with the fast paced competition. I think this is about two years ago that we. That’s right. We probably talked. And then Chris, we talked about the jazz festival back in. I think the 2023 Jazz Festival was Jazz Fest.

Khris Dodge
I’m sorry. Yeah, the Jazz Fest is.

Tom Heath
The festival is not close to the Jazz Fest this.

Khris Dodge
Year. I mean, it technically is Tucson Jazz Festival, but I like Jazz Fest as let’s bring to it. Yeah. Okay. Yeah.

Tom Heath
Well, I appreciate both of you coming back and and enjoying this brand new studio that we’ve got here.

Khris Dodge
That’s nice.

Tom Heath
But we’re we’re on to something new. You guys have partnered up, and, our, taking the world by storm, according to my friend. And wreaking, you know.

Khris Dodge
Brittany came up to me and said, like, I got something burning inside. I want to, I have it. I don’t I don’t want to, and I don’t I don’t misquote you, but like, and but I, I want to I want to find a way to express myself through music and art. And she came over, I play piano and she started singing and my mind was blown away.

Khris Dodge
Well, liked to hear someone sing and such raw talent and with such power and, intention with what she was doing was really, really impressive to me.

Tom Heath
What prompted the the the meaning? How did you guys know each other prior to this, or did you just seek him out?

Brittany Battle
Rotary club so we know each other. Rotary club and I had seen him perform years ago and didn’t realize it at the time, but I had been visualizing myself play with him, unbeknownst to Chris for years.

Tom Heath
But did you just find that out as a curious thing?

Khris Dodge
Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Tom Heath
Yeah.

Brittany Battle
And and so just wanted to be part of it somehow some day I didn’t know how or what, but then through the course of heartbreak and going through things this year, I realized I need to get this out. I don’t know how, and took it to to Chris, and he could have very easily brushed me off and said, I’m, I’m Chris, I don’t have time for this.

Brittany Battle
Who are you and why and what? But he did it. And that is why we’re sitting here today.

Khris Dodge
Well, yeah.

Tom Heath
The, the, the style of music is I’m assuming it’s it’s sort of a jazz feel to it.

Khris Dodge
Yeah. Has, I mean, what what we presented this last time was, you know, jazzy and bluesy and, kind of kind of presentation and, and, and and. Yeah, it, it was a good I think it’s a, good style of music to, to express yourself because there’s a lot of freedom within, within how you approach both those styles.

Khris Dodge
And they’re both based on the roots of jazz, which is improvisatory type music and, and expression and whatnot. And, so there was a good base for, for Britney to define her voice.

Tom Heath
Okay. And as you were finding your voice, did this, did it seem natural right away that the jazz was the outlet or did you see it?

Brittany Battle
You think?

Khris Dodge
Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, it was.

Brittany Battle
I, you know, I brought all this to him, unsure myself. And his reaction to it gave me, you know, bravery gave me courage. And I think he also his style is very interesting in terms of how he shows up for other musicians, regardless of their world class musicians or, like me, just an amateur. He trusts in your gifts and your skills, and he’s not trying to change them or manipulate them in any way.

Brittany Battle
And that was mind blowing back to me because I’m like, what are your notes like? I have like, excuse me, what do you mean? And and I think that allowed me the freedom to just go there and not be afraid that it wasn’t good enough. I wasn’t good sound right or whatever. It was just it was just wrong.

Brittany Battle
It was something I never experienced before. Plus, you know, he works with musicians on a level I’ve never been in their orbit of people that can can work like this. And as quickly as they did, I mean, our drummer showed up an hour before our show. We ran a couple songs and he killed it that night. And that is such a new concept to me.

Tom Heath
Yeah. So. And Chris, you’re you’re involved. I mean, the jazz, but you’re also involved with the Tucson Pops and.

Khris Dodge
Right.

Tom Heath
And are you still teaching? No, no. Okay. So no, but you did teach for years.

Khris Dodge
I taught for. Yeah. 20, 23, 24 years.

Tom Heath
Yeah. So I think that probably translates when you’re working with someone.

Khris Dodge
Oh for sure. Right. And to that point, everybody has value to what they want to express when they want to express it. And being that vessel to encourage that is it’s very, it’s very heartwarming to, to me. And it’s and I think it’s important that we all find our voices. And you would alluded before we went on air to like the amount of talent, listen to some from all different things, from arts to architecture to everything that encompasses what makes Tucson, Tucson.

Khris Dodge
And and I wholeheartedly believe that, there’s so many folks just like me too, that are out there that are just putting amazing talent, and they want to get stuff out. And, for us to find each other and, and to find that space to do that is, is also is is really wonderful. And then to Brittany’s credit, she’s like, if we’re going to do this, let’s, let’s figure out a way to help support the Jazzfest, what we do and, and I was.

Brittany Battle
Just trying to cry in is, you know, at his house and did it out. I didn’t expect show. I think it was just sort of the energy began to build on its own and I had watched him give a presentation once about how the jazz festival is really an economic boost to downtown and to our whole community, and it drives, you know, talent and engagement and helps do something.

Brittany Battle
And, and I realized I want to be part of that. I want to do what he’s done for me, for other people. And so as we began to discuss it, and then Rick, of course, did say, you know, wanted to be part of it, we we decided why not give back to the jazz? Why not help make this show more important, meaningful, have an impact, give back, stimulate what we’re trying to do and what we’re about.

Tom Heath
So. So tell us about the show. What’s happening with the show.

Khris Dodge
Well, we did an initial show back here, in November and, February 14th. Britney has two shows planned. One, a little more the date night of of jazz and all this is going to be at the over at Arizona Theater Company in the lounge downstairs. It’s a beautiful space and and Arizona Theater Company is a good partner with the Tucson Jazz Festival.

Khris Dodge
And, so a nice cabaret like your general, like, jazz cabaret, jazz lounge kind of setting. It’s really nice. And I would imagine we haven’t picked a set list yet, but I would imagine it’ll be a, a bunch of loves. Yeah.

Brittany Battle
Right. Love. And we’re just going to serenade people and help me fall in love with music all over again. Or each other, and just have just a classic jazz if.

Khris Dodge
Yeah. Yeah.

Tom Heath
So I want to talk a little bit about the debut because it was a sold out show. It was, it was, really well received. And whose idea was it to show up in that car and, Oh,

Brittany Battle
Well, one of my friends, me, Ray Rico from. He’s just a fabulous person, loves cars and and said, you know, how are we going to promote this show? And this is new to me again, like my day job, I promote other people. I like to lift up other people. That’s it. That’s my thing. Right. And so it was very uncomfortable for me to flip it.

Brittany Battle
And so, you know, people show up to help you do that and to give you the confidence and the courage to do that. So he showed up and said, let’s, let’s roll. You in in this beautiful vehicle. And and so I was thankful for that.

Tom Heath
It just oozed jazz. We got out of it the way you’re driving. The whole thing about it just looked such like it’s such a well put together, performance for a debut. I mean, a lot of times it debuts a little rough. Yeah. And, not this one. This one looked really polished. I couldn’t get it because the tickets were sold out.

Tom Heath
I assume the.

Khris Dodge
Music was good. Well.

Brittany Battle
The entrance is good, Chris Dodge. It was not happening. And and I think that’s just my. It’s a gift, I think, to me from the universe. God. Otherwise, to tell me that there is, to keep going in this direction. There’s something beautiful about giving back.

Tom Heath
That’s Brittany Battle. We’re talking with her and Chris Dodge, discussing an upcoming, concert on Valentine’s Day and, revisiting her debut. And we’ll be back to finish up that, conversation and talk about the Tucson Jazz Festival, which kicks off this week. In just a moment. But first, I want to remind you that you’re listening to lifelong the streetcar on downtown radio 99.1 FM, streaming on downtown radio.org.

Tom Heath
Welcome back. We’re in the middle of an interview we recorded a few weeks ago with Cris Dodge and a Brittany battle, talking about a few things. One is, her, her debut concert as a performer, her relationship and the mentorship of Cris Dodge to get her and help her to that point. We’re going to talk about an upcoming event they’re doing and also at the jazz festival.

Tom Heath
Lots to cover here, and we’ll get right back into it. Finishing up, as Brady’s discussing her, her debut it and how wonderful it was that the community all came together for a really, really fun evening.

Brittany Battle
We practiced, we played, we had other musicians. People came together. People donated that night. We laughed. We we made music together. And that’s the point. That’s the the purpose. And I think.

Khris Dodge
And that speaks volumes to the, the power of the arts and music in general. Right. It, it it has the ability to bring people together and in the space where it brings people together, the, the without, a preconceived notion of what, what’s going to happen and say, you don’t know what’s going to happen, but you know that the perhaps the edges that might come in hard are going to get softened, and you know that you’re going to receive something as a patron, and you know that you’re going to give and receive as a, as a performer in that, that magic energy between the audience and the performer create this, unreal.

Khris Dodge
Setting that, that we find that, of, of expression and understanding of each other that, doesn’t happen, in, in any other, in any other form that we have.

Tom Heath
Does jazz lend itself a little bit more to that because of the Improvizational style? And it seems that there’s so there’s less of a format sometimes of jazz.

Khris Dodge
Yeah. I mean, there is a definite, it’s not just like we have no idea what we’re going to do.

Tom Heath
Right? Sure.

Khris Dodge
But so there is there is structure, but, because, you know, we’re not sitting down and reading every single moment and playing every note as it has been thoroughly, truly composed. That gives us the ability to interpret what we’re hearing from our performer as we’re offering our support. And I told Britney throughout the process, my job is to be a security blanket for you and and to create this wonderful bed for you to, to lie in or to sing on and and to find a way to express yourself.

Khris Dodge
And don’t worry about like if you have to do something the same way every time we’re going to be there for you.

Tom Heath

Khris Dodge
Right. There’s a nice lesson that can be learned in that just through, you know just regular life skills that to know that, hey I got somebody that’s going to be there for me. And we do that through music and we can monitor and adjust what’s going on throughout the whole entire process. And and that’s engaging to us as musicians because we’re taking chances and we’re and, you know, we’re riding along this cool little path.

Khris Dodge
We kind of know where we’re going to end up. But sometimes you end up in a strawberry field, and sometimes you end up in a, you know, a better daisy. So both are wonderful.

Tom Heath
And to have had a creative outlet prior to this, to this just explode this year, or has there been a sign of this for years?

Brittany Battle
There’s been a sign of it for years. So I’ve, those that have know me have by request, asked me to do things, and and those have been the outlet. I also always had an Easter party every year in which I would do a talent show, and it became well known because, like you said, everybody has a gift, everybody has a talent, and sometimes they’re just yearning for a way to show it, and they don’t know how, or they’re scared.

Brittany Battle
Yeah, you know how much there was was layered and holding me back, and he just came over and just chipped it all away. And what do you said earlier about, you know, really letting the music form? That was a brand new concept to me as well. I thought my job was to come in and just hit my marks.

Brittany Battle
Right. And and he taught me that that’s not the case at all. We’re here to be your safety, your blanket. And that is a lesson beyond music that I needed to know that we’ve got. You matter what you do if you come in late or wrong, which I did.

Khris Dodge
You did it.

Brittany Battle
Right.

Khris Dodge
You did not. Do you.

Brittany Battle
See that? I came in wrong. And he says there’s no such thing.

Tom Heath
There you go.

Brittany Battle
And that is how I am addicted. I want more of it. I want other people to have part of it. So if you’re out there and you want to be part of it, there’s a place for you in Tucson to be part of this scene. Be learning along with us to.

Tom Heath
The events in February. Prior to that, we have, a few jazz events coming up here in Tucson. Yeah. Talk a little bit about that.

Khris Dodge
Sure. Yeah. So we have the Tucson Jazz Festival. It, opens January 17th through the 25th. It’s 40 plus shows, over 100 artists coming in from all over the world and, all over downtown from, the great jazz club. We have downtown center room to Arizona Theater Company. We’re doing stuff at the lounge there, at the cabaret, the space up there to the Rialto Theater.

Khris Dodge
Fox Theater. And then we also have, MLK day. We have a free mini jazz fest festival, the downtown Jazz Fest.

Tom Heath
That that’s been a huge, huge driver of people in the downtown getting that atmosphere. It’s it’s it is it is a well known talent there as well. I mean, you’ve got local to regional talent. Yeah. That, that come and perform and, where’s it held this year?

Khris Dodge
So it’s going to be on the on the seventh Street, right around, portraits.

Tom Heath
Okay, good.

Khris Dodge
Yeah. So we close down the street there, bring a big stage. We use the stages, outdoor stages at Corbett’s. We’re going to have a speakeasy and, and a basement area there. That’ll be kind of a really cool experience. Oh, wow. Yeah.

Tom Heath
So a jazz speakeasy,

Khris Dodge
Jazz.

Tom Heath
Go figure.

Khris Dodge
Yeah. And this one’s really cool. We brought in, it’s an unassuming space, and we’re bringing in screens and doing projection. So you’ll be transformed to, like, a different, whole, different space.

Tom Heath
Where where do we get it from on on those events?

Khris Dodge
Tucson Jazz festival.org. Okay.

Brittany Battle
Everything’s. And they have an app now. Oh, I am such a big fan of this. So sorry to cut.

Khris Dodge
Down on this.

Brittany Battle
So download their app to some jazz festival. You can see all the schedule, you can save things, get your tickets, you can learn about artists I love it, you’re on your phone already guys. Come on, come on. Just come.

Tom Heath
On. Just do it.

Khris Dodge
Download the app. Yeah, just look it out here. You can. You can learn a lot of stuff and yeah, maybe explore like oh that looks interesting. I will say this. Everything that we bring is accessible, right? If you’re somebody that’s like, I don’t listen to jazz, I don’t know what it is. It doesn’t matter. Come to a show and you’ll experience the joy of live music.

Khris Dodge
And there’s something super special about any time you take in live music. And, that energy that we talk about, that, the talent, the folks that we have are beyond talented to the highest extreme. And, yeah, it’s, I would highly encourage somebody just to go go check it out. I’m sure you will come away. So with joy and and and having a great experience.

Tom Heath
You and I talked about this a couple of years ago. And when we were discussing this and I, my I originally had some apprehensions about jazz.

Khris Dodge
Person.

Tom Heath
And I think I was either intimidated or scared or, just didn’t fully grasp it. But then I think you made the comment or someone made the comment that jazz is as a name, but but it’s there’s a whole breadth of of musical genres. It’s not fall into jazz. So you got to you got to think through kind of what what do you enjoy?

Tom Heath
There is something in there for you.

Khris Dodge
Oh for sure. Like the roots of everything that we listen to today come from jazz. Any, any modern music, R&B or hip hop or whatnot. If you follow the lineage, it’s going to go back to, you know, our early American things and the and the melting pot that started in New Orleans and, and, and, and all the different cultures that combine and truly creates a American art form and, and all the different things that, that, that, that come from that it’s very accessible for, you know, our, our whole great American songbook is, is, is wrapped in the jazz idiom and, and then the, you know, early rock and roll, I could play recordings of,

Khris Dodge
Ella Fitzgerald doing a song that, she’s doing a riff that, ended up being ripped off by Bill Haley in the comments. And strangely enough, she did the riff. Bill Haley and the comets did it. And the common factor is they both had the same record producer, but she just did it ten years ahead of them.

Khris Dodge
And so I don’t think it’s just coincidence that, you know, one of the earliest great early rock n roll songs was modeled off of one of the greatest, talent of jazz or whatever, right? They’re they’re listening to each other and borrowing from from each other. I think I love that.

Tom Heath
Well, and now the, the jazz songbook has a new voice added to it. That’s right. Yeah. And, we’re we’re excited for that. As someone is out there and they’re, they’re struggling and they want to find a passion, not everyone’s going to be as fortunate to run into a stage. Right. Well, what what can we tell them.

Tom Heath
How do they what are some steps they can take or just or just go find a Chris Dodge and, you know.

Brittany Battle
Really sit with what is it, what are you afraid of and why? Because everything you want is on the other side of it’s over there. And you just have to realize that you have all the tools you already need to get there, and people will show up in your life to help support you and get you there. And to trust yourself.

Brittany Battle
Trust the process, right?

Khris Dodge
I think sometimes just taking that, you know, jumping off the diving board into the deep end for the first time is scary, right?

Brittany Battle
And if you’re the person that was in his position, and not mine, say yes, give people a chance. Just give, give people the time. I mean, if people just a few minutes of your time and see what’s possible and make sure your intentions are pure, please, folks, what is it you’re trying to get is agreed because probably not a good idea, is it?

Brittany Battle
Love and respect and care for your community, for music, for art expression? Figure that out to Chris Dodge.

Tom Heath
Gritty Battle February 14th. We’ll have more details on the website. In the meantime, I’m sure we’ll see both of you attending. Are you performing yourself during during the festival or.

Khris Dodge
I don’t usually try to I do, you got to I know. Yeah, I got a lot going on. You know, everyone’s smile. You never know what could happen, but. Yeah.

Tom Heath
Well, I’m sure we’ll see the two of you around. And, I appreciate you helping her bring her voice into the world. I appreciate you overcoming that, that anxiety and getting that for us to share.

Brittany Battle
Thank you.

Khris Dodge
Great to share with you.

Brittany Battle
What you’re doing, helping people tell their stories. It’s really important.

Tom Heath
Enrique said I had to do it now because in a year, you gonna be too famous. Oh, yeah.

Brittany Battle
I will always come back. Always?

Khris Dodge
Yeah. He’s a good agent. He’s had an addition that.

Brittany Battle
He knows his gift. That’s. It’s good.

Tom Heath
He’s a good agent. I heard he worked for, Ella Fitzgerald and Bill Haley as years ago. Yeah. Anyway, thanks.

Khris Dodge
Thanks so much for your time. You bet.

Tom Heath
