Well, we are, all kinds of things are afoot here in the Old Pueblo surrounding a life along the street, car, podcasting and all kinds of good things are coming from that seven years, in October. This is our seven year anniversary of doing the show, and we’re looking to expand into other areas, helping people create their own podcasts, providing some support and guidance along the way.

We’re going to have some sources and outlets for you to, to work on here in the very, very near future. My my guest today is, local comedian. She is an actress. She is a singer and a songwriter, a model, incredibly creative, incredibly talented.

And she is going to be headlining a show in Thursday, which is Halloween here in downtown Tucson. And she’ll reference this in our interview. So I kind of want to preface it, and let you know that, we are also collaborating on a new show, podcast that we’re working on called Something Funny About Tucson. Wasn’t quite ready to announce that yet, but she mentioned it in the interview and I thought, heck, why not get it out there?

But she and I are going to be co-hosting a podcast to launch in 2025 about the humor of Tucson. Not just comedy, but the facets of humor that will include stage writing, as well as what you you might think of a stand up comedy and such. So I’m looking forward to working with her. But before all of that, we have, our interview about her upcoming event where she is headlining a show.

It’s being held at the proper shops, performance centers, the patio area right behind the, the proper shops, 300 East Congress. And we sat down with her just a couple of days ago to talk about the performance and get some background about her and how she came to be where she is kind of excited. This is the very first podcast in the new studio, and kind of hinting about this on the air for a while, but we have the, the show source studio set up, and we are doing, very First Life Along the Street Car podcast.

And we thought of pioneers in the world. We need to have Sarah Mira Solar as our pioneer guest for this show, because you are a pioneer in so many ways, including comedy, which we’ll talk about. But for the very few people that don’t know you, what’s your brief background?

Sara Mirasola
Oh my goodness, how much time do we have to? Okay, I know talk about what I do is like getting the town crier here. You hear me? The scroll goes down the central square. Stand up comic, independent film and stage actress, model and photographer. I’m a writer. Poetry, nonfiction. I, recently started playing, guitar around town as Charm City departed with the original singer songwriter coffee shop acoustics, sound.

Sara Mirasola
I make things. They sell wands and hats and very wings. Craft fairs. What else do I do? I just started a podcast. We tell them here is called. There’s something funny about to say.

Tom Heath
Well, don’t. So now she’s letting the cat out of the bag. No pun intended. There. Which we’ll get later. But tell me about the for the creative side. I mean, right now you’re professionally very creative, and you’ve always been a creative person, but was there a time when you were professionally, like in a, in a in like a job or an.

Sara Mirasola
Office, so many quote, real jobs or, you know, my day job was my my real job. Because I definitely so I’ve modeled for about 20 years now and that was always freelance sort of, side secondary. A lot of my main background is in waitressing, retail, customer service, but I do also have, tech background, for coding and.

Sara Mirasola
Yeah. Hello. Have you tried turning it off and back on again for it? Right. You know, it’s interesting.

Tom Heath
Yeah. You said it was customer service, serving. And, what else was there in there?

Sara Mirasola
Retail and tech. Yeah.

Tom Heath
That’s like. Yeah. It’s like the that’s the core of any, creative background that I’ve heard of. You’ve always going to have that, that basic foundation of, of those, of those, but you’ve, you’ve moved on into things where you’re, you’re professional, you’re making money doing things that you love and you’re doing a lot. You mentioned a lot of different things.

Tom Heath
Yeah. And we don’t have time to focus all of them. But I think 20, 25, we’ll just have a show every month about Sarah, and we’ll just focus on one of your one of your many talents.

Sara Mirasola
And this week.

Coming up in the very near future, just in a couple of days, you’ve got a comedy performance that has evolved over the last ten or so several months. It’s a no, I’m sorry. You have an award winning comedy performance that is, being debuted here in Tucson.

Sara Mirasola
I do, yes. Can I, can I talk about.

Tom Heath
You can talk about whatever you want. This is your show.

Sara Mirasola
Yeah. So on October 31st, which is Halloween, and I’m super excited about that date. Because I am still a spooky could, at heart, it wasn’t just a phase, but, Yeah, know. And I’ve always loved Halloween. And so that’s our date, October 31st. And it is the show is called and sometimes y and sometimes y, to talk about a particular joke that happens in the show, which focuses on sometimes after breakups, you have XS and sometimes you have Ys.

Sara Mirasola
And that’ll be myself, showcasing Max Adler featuring Holly Hilton and then Sarah. Sometimes myself is the headliner, and that headliner performance, there will be a chunk with the character, the political cat lady. And it is. It is a part of me, but she’s, she’s a little persnickety and she’s got some political thoughts about cats.

Tom Heath
As well as I think cats are one of the largest voting blocs that we currently have. It’s an important audience to have.

Sara Mirasola
I think.

Tom Heath
So keeping in mind that the show airs on Downtown Radio, which is a nonprofit station, we are, very politically neutral. Yes. I do want to highlight the fact that that your show is many things. Oh, yeah. And and, you know, politics, of course, being a part of that, but you are, you’re you’re funny.

Tom Heath
Even if you’re not political. You can be funny.

Sara Mirasola
Thank you. Yeah. Sometimes I’m funny looking. No, I, I definitely had always steered away from a lot of political jokes. I would make little quips, little asides for the one sober person in the bar crowd that’s actually paying attention. But I kind of always steered away from it because I didn’t necessarily want any of my comedy to necessarily have a political, you know, and yeah, anything outside of neutrality can cause contention.

Sara Mirasola
And I didn’t necessarily want that to interact with the tikis in the pews and the chuckles, you know, but some of the, the recent events kind of especially things that were said specifically about people that like cats, was the impetus to start the show. And, so Cat lady has her own little opinions and moment. She, she’s almost, a little bit of a nosy missus rat.

Sara Mirasola
If anyone references like that child book.

Tom Heath
No idea what you’re talking about. Okay.

Sara Mirasola
Yeah, the nosy missus rat. She just has to get all up in your business. But, yeah, the rest of my set. Then when it is, you know, Sarah, not just cat lady doing, material, I think. I think the keywords we have are Halloween. Growing up a spooky kid, but now being a fashion tourist. My monster is Hermione Granger.

Hair, cats, politics and Lady Gaga.

Well, our guest today, Sarah Masala, has some connection through the Tucson Gallery. As you may know, if you’ve been to the proper shops were in which the gallery sits, the area behind, the shops, there’s a really nice open courtyard that has been used as a performance center. And Sarah, along with some friends, are going to be hosting a comedy show there this coming Thursday.

Tom Heath
She’s been talking a little bit about the, how the show came to be and some of the things you’re going to see on there. And in this second part of the interview, I also want to talk a little about how she got to being, where she is. As we mentioned in the interview, she’s doing a lot of creative things, including acting, modeling, comedy, singing, songwriting, lots of different components of this creative side.

Tom Heath
Wanted to find out when she learned to tap into that and and kind of how that evolved. You got to start in standup doing it. Did you start like in comedy? You started with sketches and moved in to standup or did you start in standup? I move into sketches or.

Sara Mirasola
Such a funny background. Yeah. So my biggest creative block that I’ve always had since I was little was to be an actor. I love having fanciful stories that are based in reality. Even the most fiction. That truth of the reality is what allows you to care about this fictitious made up land. But I loved how playing dress up and pretend, if you will, could convey a story to someone else.

Sara Mirasola
And you find that connection and you find strength, you find healing, you find different information packaged in a way that your own surroundings and family might not have ever garnered for you. And so I was four years old and I went to see it was called the Popcorn Hat Players. It’s a Pennsylvania, Shakespeare troupe, but for children and I, about four years old, watching it.

Sara Mirasola
And my mom says, how did you like the performance? And I had a list of all these different ways they could have done it better, because that’s the joke. How many actors does it take to change a light bulb?

Tom Heath
I don’t know how.

Sara Mirasola
Many one to change it, and 99 to tell you how they could have made a different choice. And I just always it was the one creative thing I didn’t have an answer for. Why do you want to do it? That’s just how much I knew I wanted to do it. So I’ve been in, you know, funny first place.

Sara Mirasola
Or I played the comic relief character. And I’d always loved that. And I actually always thought I wasn’t funny on my own for standup. I never thought so. I can make my friends laugh. You’re really good at remembering a joke from forever ago and waiting for that boom, you know? But somehow all of a sudden, about three years ago, I was in a really bad car accident.

Sara Mirasola
And,

We’re just the beginning of every comedy story I.

Sara Mirasola
Know, right? Right. Thank God all this trauma made me hilarious.

Tom Heath
If you’re not watching the video, Sarah just showed us a very significant scar up on her right bicep.

Sara Mirasola
Yes.

Shoulder.

Sara Mirasola
And, so a semi truck had slipped on the highway, and I was driving a Prius, and so my versus Prius fight, and I didn’t, I lived. Yeah, but, not unscathed. And, it was pretty serious, and that really made me have a moment and go. Well, you’ve been watching stand up comedy all these years, and you take notes and you have ideas, and I’d written my own sketches or my own little, like, TikTok idea concepts for a cute little video.

Sara Mirasola
And I went, it’s time.

Tom Heath
This is such an amazing story of someone that has grown up in this comedic background. Makes it makes the decision to go into stand up comedy after a serious event. It’s, you know, it’s not like, hey, everyone tells you you’re funny, you’ve always known that. But all of a sudden now you realize you have a platform where you can create your own world, your own environment, and you can determine what’s what’s funny and then help people,

Sara Mirasola
Frankly, especially because, I actually wasn’t told I was funny for years. There was I was not really ever the class clown. I could make people laugh or I could do funny things, but I was always the kid that everybody else had done it. But I did it. And then I got in trouble for everybody. Or, I was the person that got yelled at because I was taking time away from the group, even though everyone else got to say a joke.

Sara Mirasola
So I actually, Well, I’ve always been told I talk too much, but I wasn’t being. And I was more of a quiet kid. I wasn’t a class clown, I wasn’t slapstick, I was the internet and, you know, made this person right here laugh. Because if I interrupted the group, we’d get in trouble. I actually, I had a, I had an acting teacher told me, when I was working on an audition monologue that I was going to take her out to a lot of theaters, tell me that I wasn’t funny, and that he thought I should only do dramatic, readings and dramatic acting because I was so serious and people told me

Sara Mirasola
my life stories. Oh, they’re so sad. Or. Your stories are so sad, Sarah, you’re such a sad person.

Tom Heath
It’s like it’s so hard for me to see someone saying that about you, that you’re. You’re too serious. It’s hard. Hard for me to get that. I have seen a serious side of you, so I know you can be. But, the comedic. So I guess because that’s how I was introduced to you is through comedy. I keep to some sketchy.

Tom Heath
And that’s how I first saw you in that, that to me you know, it just set the tone right away that you are a humorous person.

Sara Mirasola
I’m really an absurdist to me. All of life is hilarious and I do laugh about it and I do cry about it, but finding something in between so that the bad never really hits you that hard, and the good doesn’t put you on such a pedestal that you have a really far to fall when the bad happens, and taking it all about in the middle ground of oh well, this might as well be happening right now.

Sara Mirasola
Let’s let’s do something about it before I.

Tom Heath
Could worry about it. But wouldn’t that really help? Yeah, let’s make people laugh. Yeah. And it’s Sarah sometimes is the stage name. Yes. And the show is sometimes.

Sara Mirasola
Why? Yeah.

Tom Heath
I have to scream that a little louder. And the flier, it’s actually fun when you see the flier that you created and I. Yeah, you can show it. Everyone on the radio would love that.

Sara Mirasola
Yeah, I know everyone on the radio. Look at this beautiful flier.

And sometimes. Why the the the the flier, conveys that sentiment as well of the frustration. We just have a couple of minutes here. But you, you’ve got yourself two others performing and a little bit about the details where people get information. What time is it? Is is there a cost? Is it is it $600 to get in?

What’s the million dollars? Is it I don’t know if anyone gets that reference and not that my Doctor Evil was ever that great.

Tom Heath
But I don’t know if a lot of people are going to show up, but it just takes one.

Sara Mirasola
Yeah. So yeah. 7 p.m. October 31st, which is Halloween. Doors will open for me officially at 630. However, ahead of time, the proper Shops and Tucson gallery will be open and our events taking place in their performance courtyard. So you actually enter from Congress through the proper shops into the courtyard, all one level, in case anybody has some handy capabilities that they might be worried about.

No stairs, nothing to deal with. Lots of space and ability to easily get to the bathrooms. Max Adler and Holly Hilton are performing with me. They are hilarious. And the proper shops. I would love for everybody to go and check them out before the show. Lots of local artists tickets.

Tickets are going to be $15. There is an Eventbrite link, but there is Nancy, I know, and there’s a QR code for that on the poster, which you can currently find floating about the internet. Sometimes that has our ticket link and I will also there will still be ability to buy tickets at the door as long as we don’t sell out.

You and, Max, especially. Also, he’s multi multi-talented. He sits, first chair oboe with the symphony. He’s also a skilled, street style dancer in the style of vogue. So he’ll probably potentially, if he feels as if he feels the inclination, pull out some booking on stage. I do also have a special little pre-show for anybody that’s live through there before seven.

About five minutes before seven, there’ll be a cute little pre-show. We’ll keep seating right up till seven though.

So the show doesn’t start till seven. But if you get there before seven, there’ll be a show.

That’s just how you creatives work, isn’t it?

Sara Mirasola
Yes. And it’s infuriating to everyone. Including us. They get so food and drink, they’ll be, Hi me good. Okay. Proper bar. If you can get food ahead of time, come down to the show. If you’re not done munching, all food and drink allowed out on the patio have to be over 21 for drinks. I did ask that.

Sara Mirasola
Everyone be over 18 for this show. I just didn’t want to have to deal with the 18 years of legal age of adulthood, right? If you have a child in high school, it’s up to your discretion. If you think, nothing is purposefully overly crass or blue material, but I occasionally I’m do I’m doing a really good job since we’re not cutting for the air today, but sometimes things come out of my mouth and I wish I could.

And of course, there’s that’s what a seven year old sitting there and I’m going, oh, they have food and drinks. Totally welcome. The shops do close at eight, but we are going to take an intermission at 730. Use the bathroom, do whatever you need and that’ll set up. She’ll come back and then I’ll performance the headliner. Or sometimes.

And then we’re going to have a costume contest.

But it’s I mean, that’s really more on someone that dresses up. They used to give you a discount going to the red fair. If you dressed up, I would literally wear the clothes. I went to school that day and they would give me a discount because come as you are, but anyone that wants to dress up and have a little bit of fun, there will be a small but special little prize for you at the end.
