Both Tom and James share a strong commitment to helping Tucsonans share their stories, believing that every story has value and deserves to be told. Whether it’s a local volunteer talking about their organization, a small business owner discussing their unique products, or someone simply sharing a personal family narrative, Show Source Studios is here to amplify these voices. The studio creates an inviting space for recording and captures those meaningful stories that contribute to Tucson’s diverse cultural tapestry.
Show Source Studios also offers a space to record legacy stories and personal narratives, capturing moments that matter deeply to families and loved ones. Tom shares a personal anecdote about wishing he’d recorded conversations with his mother before she passed. This concept—using the studio to preserve family memories and legacy stories—highlights the unique, personal ways Show Source Studios can serve the community. Show Source welcomes people from all walks of life to capture their memories, milestones, and life lessons for future generations, making it more than a studio; it’s a space for preserving Tucson’s legacy.

Tom Heath
There’s a contact button there. There’s also information about past episodes, our book and, all kinds of cool things to do over there. The, podcasts. That’s the word I’m looking for. The podcasts are available on iTunes, iHeart radio, Spotify, SoundCloud, all kinds of places out there. You should be able to find it if you are a podcast listener.
Tom Heath
Well, tis the season, right? We’re getting into our, crazy busy time. It’s hard to get downtown without a major event, and we got a couple going on this weekend. Today is the second day of the Dusk Music Festival. It’s been going on for a few years. If you want to learn more about kind of its origins, we interviewed Paige Rapp.
Tom Heath
Gosh, several years ago. I think it was in its second, first, second, third year early on, about him and the organization, how they got rolling. But, yeah, it’s a huge event downtown, Saturday. And then again today, Sunday, around, the Huckabee Plaza there, the Dusk Music Festival. And then tomorrow, in honor of Veterans Day, there is a parade.
Tom Heath
It’s going to start marching at 11 a.m.. It takes place around the convention center, and it’s now in its 105th year, celebrating those who support and protect us, 105 years of this, of this historic parade. It does not take a huge footprint. But it will cause a few delays if you’re in the the convention center area.
Tom Heath
So dusk to sun Veterans Day and is just getting started. You know, we get coming up here just a couple weeks this Thanksgiving. And following that is the small business Saturday and the shopping season. And we invite you to come down to the urban core there from the Mercato all the way to the University of Arizona. Hop on the street car kinds of shopping and things that you can explore in the downtown area.
Tom Heath
Also, is specifically in downtown, a lot of Congress and Broadway that the trees are wrapped with the lights. The buildings will be have some illumination here soon. There’s some holiday decorations going up and the weather is turning chilly. So it’s a festive time to be out and about. Well, our guest today is James Portis, and you’ve heard me mention his name.
Tom Heath
A bunch of times because he’s the man behind the show. He’s our production specialist. And I came up with that title because I couldn’t figure out what he does. He does everything. I think I do things, and then I turn it over to him and he makes them better. So I’m like, I’m not sure if I helped or just gotten his way.
Tom Heath
But regardless, James has been a part of the show for for years, and, his his input and involvement has really catapult us, catapulted us forward. The website, social media, the book, the the streaming, on on the podcasting platforms, all of this is really, a testament to, to the work that James puts in behind the scenes.
Tom Heath
And now he’s working on a new project, called the Show Source Studios to help other podcasters and storytellers. So we wanted to get, information about James and his new process and products. And of course, I have to throw in my caveat here, my, my notice that I am also involved the James in Show source studio.
Tom Heath
So again, I’m, I’m coming at this from the perspective of a show host, but I do have some information to share with you about the project that’s coming out. But here’s this interview with James. I did, recorded in the show. So studios well, this is a very special treat on Life Along the Streetcar, because I always mention this gentleman’s name as our production specialist because we can’t figure out what to call him.
Tom Heath
Yes. Because he does everything. But this is the, James Portis, who without him, the show, the book that we wrote, this show does not happen. So, James, welcome to to this side of life. A lot.
James Portis
Be here. We’ve been looking forward to it.
Tom Heath
And how did we meet?
James Portis
It was it’s been years ago. I would say, we both know Tony Ray Baker. Okay. Very talented realtor here in Tucson. You know, how did you meet Tony Ray?
Tom Heath
I, I think I met him through some downtown projects because we’re both involved with that and and crossed over, and. That’s right. We were working at his office downtown, and he had the green screen set up, and we started doing that video. Seriously?
James Portis
Okay. I’m not so much really fun video series about things that because you you an incredible mortgage officer, but this couple things that you’re not so great at, it’s, it’s a funny look at some of those.
Tom Heath
And then James is also my hype man. That’s the that’s the other part of the production. Yeah. Production specialist. Well, I know I when I got the idea for the show, 7 or 8 years ago at this point, just kind of started it and didn’t really know what we were doing. And now, just having recorded somewhere over 300 and some episodes because.
James Portis
Kind of just make the, you know. Yeah.
Tom Heath
12 starting to get it figured out a little bit. Yeah. We’re getting there a little bit. Oh yeah. We got hopefully video set up here.
James Portis
It’s the space Spectacular where we’ve been able to create this, it’s stunning.
Tom Heath
The, the space that James referring to is the show Source Studios. We talked about it a little bit on, some previous episodes, and that’s kind of the focus of of today. I just want to make sure, first of all, everyone, a chance to meet you and see, the magic of what you do. And but we’re, you know, the lifelong streetcar still running, still going strong.
Tom Heath
Well, you and I are kind of embarked on a couple of projects, one of which is the studio, the physical manifestation. It’s the show source studio. Correct. So what’s a little bit about how that studio works?
James Portis
Well, so we’re still we’re still in planning stages. So it really become what will become an incredible project in the future. Right now we have, we have a for a, for top set up. So we can, we can record, two different guests, two guests in two house, same time. So it’s really, really a really robust set up.
James Portis
We have a wonderful lighting array, and it’s all hanging from the ceiling, so we don’t have to trip around a bunch of wires and a bunch of, and deal with the getting around. A lot of equipment makes it really friendly for people as well. When they first come into a studio, you’ll see poles and wearing wires hanging them.
James Portis
Just. This seems like a dungeon, but this is a fun, fun little area to have a conversation, tell a story.
Tom Heath
And I think the, the, motivation for this, as you and I were talking, kind of thinking back again to how we started and the numerous, numerous mistakes that were made as we set up the podcasting, technical, the, promotional marketing, you know, logistics, all these new things that you just don’t think are going to, be important because you’re only doing a couple of shows.
Tom Heath
And then when you get into, you know, 6 or 7 years later, you’re like, man, we could have done things differently. And and now, I mean, this is an opportunity for, for people, I think if they’re new in podcasting or want a podcast or just really want to occasionally go in and promote their, their, their trade or their market, you know, we have a space for them now.
James Portis
So it’s an incredible opportunity, especially with the the explosive growth of podcasting in general. In the past couple of years, the listener count, the amount of shows us the amount of shows that are being developed. The, the just give you some of the, a really good idea of the, the audience that’s coming up that we really we can really tap into and beyond beyond just, having the audio component with the video together, creating the emotional impact.
James Portis
That’s really difficult, to I haven’t any other, messaging medium. So it’s a really it’s a great way to, to touch you can touch your clients and touch you to touch your, your touch your customer in, in a profound way that’s different than just a single messaging customer might be messaging on the phones, on, advertising screens, everything.
James Portis
Probably can pick up a little bit. I agree. We’ll cut that out.
Tom Heath
But we don’t at I want to streak or we don’t. I don’t like from the street curse are the magic. So part of the magic, I very I cut you off there as I was just fiddling around with my mic. So when you get when you start getting the technical side, James is like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Tom Heath
I put them, like, there for a reason. So that’s.
James Portis
I was thinking the whole time that we probably could with them, like, a little bit,
Tom Heath
So the things, you know, what I bring to the table is I like to talk. I’m an inquisitive person by nature. I enjoy asking questions. I like to find out. And that’s a big component of of of creating a radio show or a podcast. But that doesn’t go anywhere without the technical expertise and and all the way I’ve been learning.
Tom Heath
That can be daunting, sir. You know, and that’s scary. That’s having someone you in my corner, has made that a lot different. So if that’s the the hold up for someone, and, they should probably check out show source.
James Portis
That’s a really good point. Do acquire the equipment and have knowledge of using the equipment in the first place. Is it’s, you’re a years long process to to gain the technical knowledge, you need to, to administer all these different systems. But then once you have everything set up, you actually have to, to acquire them, then purchase all this equipment and, and, and put it in the right locations.
James Portis
And there’s so much that goes on to, creating a video product that, the show. So in the studio that we created, we can actually, we can remove a lot of the, the barriers to entry. And really, if you have a really good story to tell, if you have a an idea that you want to convey to people, we can give you a platform or a, an avenue to really tell that story to as many people as you can.
James Portis
You can you can dream up.
Tom Heath
I’ve talked to a couple of local business owners who don’t really want to do a podcast, but they have they have a specialty of knowledge, something that they’ve accrued over the years that they would like to share, whether it’s one time or periodically. And the cost then of getting everything done over, you know, for, for such a, a small number of, of episodes doesn’t seem to make sense.
Tom Heath
I think that’s another good fit for us. I agree, and there and then, you know, this is an interesting and I don’t know what the market is on this, but my you know, as you know, I lost my mom earlier this year and as a as a show host, I’m used to asking questions. And she and I have some great conversations that occurred to me.
Tom Heath
And this is, you know, of course, after the fact in too late that none of those conversations were recorded. So I’ve got the memories of them, and I really enjoyed that time with her. But my family doesn’t have that. My nephew doesn’t have that. And and I thought, how, how and how silly was that? I didn’t even just put down a recorder.
Tom Heath
And you don’t need all the fancy equipment that we have to make that happens that much. You can make something special for your family. I think if you, you know, that could be another potential use of of the studio is just having a chance to people to tell their family stories.
James Portis
That’s a really fantastic point. And, and this is another reason why I work so well. Things you have a you’re very compassionate person. You’re very, you’re very open and and you, you connect to people in an incredible way. And I can certainly, certainly agree that, those families, family legacy videos or the interviews that you’re speaking about are a great way to to captivate or to capture the of some someone lives their life, they go through some many experiences, and then you you might deal with them.
James Portis
You might and you might share your experience with them. But you understand the the depth of the of their their knowledge, the depth of their their experience in life. And this is a really great way to capture that and share it with, share it with, with your family or even with the people that you know.
Tom Heath
Yeah. Who knows everyone. I so many people that I talked to on this show, they’re surprised, like, you want to interview me? Like I don’t really do anything. I’m just a volunteer at this organization or whatever it might be. And everybody I’ve talked to, everybody. Everybody has a fascinating story. If you just start asking the right questions and and digging deep enough, we are in the middle of our interview with James Portis, the production specialist, the man behind All Along the Streetcar that really makes this thing tick.
Tom Heath
Also discussing the newest venture shows or studios and how to help other podcasters and storytellers and way back to finish up that interview in just a moment. But I wanna remind you that you are currently listening to Life Along the Streetcar, Downtown Radio 99.1 FM and streaming at Downtown radio.org.
James Portis
This podcast is sponsored by Tom Heath and the heat team and over Home Loans. If you’ve enjoyed this podcast, continue listening or head over to life on the Street. Kokomo for current events and information on what to do while visiting Tucson. Tom Heath and MLS number 182420 Nova and MLS number 3087, UK number 0902429. Equal Housing Opportunity.
Tom Heath
We are back to finish up our conversation with James Portis. Really kind of diving into his newest effort here in Tucson to show us where studios a place in process to help podcasters, storytellers kind of get the word out.
Tom Heath
Well, let’s let’s talk about logistics. So just from a standpoint of from the outsider that just sees the end result and, and I remember I, I, I made this, this comment two years ago. And I think it was with, with I forget who I was with, but I was like, oh, we just do this. Then James does his magic in and then it gets done.
Tom Heath
That’s it. And then you’re like, no, no, no, it’s not magic. That’s a year’s worth of experience. It’s knowledge. It’s hours of trial and error. It’s not just magic is like magic at this point.
James Portis
I mean, beginning it was there’s a lot more air than trial, but so it becomes the magic.
Tom Heath
So the way we have it set up, I will do the interview. A lot of times I do the interview on my own. And then I will prep for the show, get the, the, the radio show portion of it done. And then I turn it over to you and then in like, what’s your process at that point?
James Portis
So I turn the radio show into a podcast that we that we distribute on the different, different channels. Spotify, I radio, Amazon, Apple and Google, all the different ones that you can think of where, if you can even ask you, you can ask your smart speaker out or if you find you can say, play the Life on iPhone speaker podcast, it’ll pull up that way.
James Portis
It’s a great way to disseminate the, you know, fantastic show, which is a local radio show, but we can actually share that with the larger audience.
Tom Heath
So how how long does something like that take you with, with your knowledge? So you have to go to each platform and upload it.
James Portis
You don’t have to do that. Thankfully we, we use a service called SoundCloud, which, which you, you which you mentioned RSS feed, which is a data feed that goes out and gets updated periodically. Which, which, contains the links to our different episodes. So we have, we have a repository of episodes on SoundCloud. Must be, probably over through 3 or 400 at this point because we have different clips in there.
James Portis
We have so much stuff. If you have a, if you have a perusing SoundCloud, soundcloud.com and you just, hanging out looking for something to listen to, we have more than enough stuff to, to keep you entertained. But so once you, once you upload up to SoundCloud and they’re, they’re, they’re the, the file library, and then they create links.
James Portis
They create links to each one of you episodes that we send to the different, to our radio, to, to Amazon. So they, they, they don’t really get this radio show. They get the links and they pull in the radio show. But that way.
Tom Heath
And then that’s, that’s, that’s done automatically. Okay. And, and you.
James Portis
Semi so you, it’s set up correctly but yes.
Tom Heath
So you went into for example Spotify set it up and said, hey, at this time each week go into SoundCloud and and upload the new episodes.
James Portis
That’s exactly what I did. Okay. The exact process.
Tom Heath
And so then you on, after you’ve made the edits and the edits primarily are changing the underwriting. Sure. You know, we used some music at the end of the show, which we don’t carry through to the podcast because there’s a nonprofit radio station. I have a little bit more leeway, but the the podcast, we don’t want to, be using anyone’s music without, explicit permission.
Tom Heath
Like, like Ryan Hood.
James Portis
So that’s Ryan Hood.
Tom Heath
I do.
James Portis
A little bit of mixing as well, or mastering as well. So with the you do all them, you do most of the mixing. A great job. You give me, give me all the levels just in the right, the, the right, relative relative peaks. Then I try to, set it to, we want, we want our want our, presentation to come up at the same, same levels as everyone else’s.
James Portis
So if they’re listening, listen to when when podcast and listen to our podcast, they’ll have to change that. Change the volume at all. They’ll have to, really do anything. It’s this exact same, impact everyone else podcasts and, they use a newer, a more modern term, for, for to to give you a blanket idea of what the sound will be when they, when someone’s listening to it, that’s called lefse.
James Portis
Laughs. We when, whenever we, whenever we’re doing the or mixing, you’re mixing a little bit lower, then it’s going to be an, broadcast. So you use mastering to bring it up to the level that’s going to be matching everyone else’s stuff.
Tom Heath
That, you know, that happened, you know, happened. So basically I record, put it on the air and then you make it sound better.
James Portis
Yeah, I was mixing a little bit more crisper.
Tom Heath
Listening on the radio. Sorry, you’re getting much again, my version now.
James Portis
I think you know.
Tom Heath
It’s been a learning lesson over the years, the software and just understanding some of the technical levels and some of the language, you know, the these software, it’s it’s kind of what I would imagine someone who, you know, might have a nice car and they sit in a, in a Formula One race car for the first time with all these buttons and bells and whistles, and this thing can go 200 plus miles an hour, but you have to know how to operate it.
Tom Heath
That’s how I feel with, like, software getting and getting there. Baby steps, and learning and the, you know, the idea behind the studio is, you know, someone like that has my experience could come in and really just rent a studio. It might not need to have the the technical expertise, but then, I’ve always joked with people, you know, they say, how do you make that happen?
Tom Heath
Like, oh, I have a James. You need a James, everybody needs a James. And this is an opportunity for people then to get it, get a job.
James Portis
You can have a James come in. You got there. James is waiting for you.
Tom Heath
So of.
James Portis
Course.
Tom Heath
Of course there will be costs and all that stuff, which we’ll, you know, we’ll we’ll outline that and and get that information out into the world. The website, is it set up? Yes it is. Yeah.
James Portis
It’s it’s still in progress, but I think you I’ll show you today. I think you really gonna be happy with what we’ve been able to accomplish so far. It’s show source studios.com.
Tom Heath
Okay, so check that out. I don’t think we’ve really narrowed down all of the functionality and features and everything. Yeah, but it’s something just to give you a general idea that we’re looking to for feedback. You know, if this is something that you see a value, you know, I had someone approached me recently that, they do, videos for the tech or the talk or whatever it is for windows two.
Tom Heath
And they wanted a space to, record something like that. We can, we can put a course or history to make that happen. And, so the different, different versions of that, I don’t think we’re going to be an advertising or marketing studio necessarily. Quite. Yeah. It’s really about storytelling in some fashion. And I agree. And with social media, storytelling is, you know, a lot of a lot different than it than it may have been.
James Portis
And local story stories that really impact our local community. I really feel I feel drawn, I feel a connection to to Tucson, to the community, the people here, the the kindness and the warmth. I want to share that with everyone else.
Tom Heath
Well, and is there is there an email address associated with all this yet, or is it.
James Portis
You can you can email us at info at. Sure. So studios.com.
Tom Heath
All right. So if you want more information about how this is going to work, if you’ve got someone that might be interested. And honestly we this is at some point a profit making venture. But it’s also a community effort. So if there are organizations that that might need help actually that don’t have the funds, just info at at shows or studio.
Tom Heath
Exactly. Plural Studios.
James Portis
Exactly.
Tom Heath
And this is how much I know everyone needs a James. I know our website. But but I’m excited for the, for that phase. It’ll probably be really up and running in 2025 and we will be doing some, some testing, like this show being recorded in the studio. And, yeah. But if you if you’re interested in being part of the test, you know that this would be the chance to maybe come out.
James Portis
We’d love to.
Tom Heath
Have you come. And, you know, if you’re one of those. I just want to do one show about my business. This could be a chance to get a nice free, Piece for your portfolio.
James Portis
Well, everyone has a story. And especially a business when you’re dealing with actual, real people. You have so many stories of just your interactions with your customers and or your clientele, and that, those stories are golden, and and people really relate, resonate to, real, real honest stories from, people care.
Tom Heath
I know from, my business and, you know, the where the the thing where I make the money in the mortgage business. I have this sort of philosophy. If I have to explain the same thing to three people, then I’m going to do a video, right? Because there’s more people that out of that question. I’d rather just explain it one time thoroughly and then not that I don’t want to explain it to people, but be able to put that out there as a resource to the world to say, hey, if this is your question, here’s a a reasonable answer to really good point.
Tom Heath
Well, the show is life on the Street car. It’s been going on since October of 2017. Wow. The, the amount of knowledge that I have gained over the years is tremendous.
James Portis
It’s been a wild ride.
Tom Heath
And the, the support that you provided has been significant.
James Portis
Appreciate that.
Tom Heath
I don’t think we’d be where we are. I know we would not be where we are without without you making it happen. So everyone. James, pause might be the last time you see or follow the camera.
James Portis
Think so? No need to be seen.
Tom Heath
Okay, good. Well, someone’s. That’s true. We do have a man. And now, can do behind the scenes works. Maybe you need to do a podcast. Yeah, we’ll do it. I know, I know, a great studio record is it getting set up?
James Portis
You can get me up and get.
Tom Heath
You need. I need it, James. Thanks for your time. James Portis, the man behind the scenes of life along the streetcar. And I am not embellishing when I say that our success is is directly related to his involvement. We’d have a product, we’d have something out there because this is a fun thing, and I like talking to people and telling stories and having people share their stories.
Tom Heath
But we would not have the depth and impact that we have and it wouldn’t be as accessible. I’m, I’m certain the book wouldn’t be done without his, organization in, efforts to make that really a driving force. So, James, appreciate you, buddy. Thanks for all you’re doing. My name is Tom Heath. You are listening to lifelong the streetcar in downtown radio 99.1 FM streaming on downtown radio.org.
James Portis
Support for downtown radio is provided by the Tucson Gallery, located in downtown Tucson. Instead of the proper shops at the East, County Street, the Tucson Gallery offers original work, reproductions, and merchandise from Tucson artists like Joe Pejic, Jessica Gonzalez, Ignacio Garcia, and many more. For information about other artists, including when they open up at the gallery, head to the Tucson gallery.com or find them on Instagram and Facebook as Tucson Gallery.
Tom Heath
We say bye bye, but we don’t want you to go anywhere because Ted Presents is coming up in just a few minutes with his show Words and Work, where he interviews writers and others of the labor movement. And then at noon, we have Ty Logan. Heavy mental drive kicks back the music off at 1:00 with, speaker box, excuse me.
Tom Heath
And, then it’s music until next Sunday. We are a rock and roll radio station. Monday, Monday through Saturday. And then a little bit of this, it shows an alternative style of music here on Sundays. Full lineup is on the station’s website, which is downtown radio.org, and I always encourage you to check it out and look for a DJ or a show source or show topic that you are not familiar with, and spend a little time driving, walking, whatever you do to, get it for a few minutes of your time to yourself and listen in the the quality of the music, the quality of the curation is just really, really top
Tom Heath
notch. If you are on the website, there’s also a donate button because we are a volunteer run and your dollars go to help support the station, pay the rent, and do all those things that we need to do to continue to be on the air and broadcast for you. Social media, Facebook and Instagram are probably the the best ways, to do that. We, we really appreciate any collaboration that, you can you can, you can help us with. And if you’ve got something going on, tell us, because we’d love to share what you’re doing as well. Well, the production specialist is the aforementioned James Portis.
